Carney was absolutely resolute that the American pay to play was just posturing. The US position continues to weaken and will probably evaporate after the midterms when congress resumes its role as a co-equal branch of government and puts the brakes on Trump and his minions. No need to give Oxygen to the current administration bully tactics at all as far as I can see. Certainly the fear mongering implied is unnecessary. Canada is in the hands of an expert negotiator who will never negotiate in public or give credibility to the US bully tactics or give the bully administration any oxygen. This is a non story until Carney is done his negotiations. He will never do a bad deal for Canada. I would take that to the bank and sleep well and not worry about problems that are not real. The universe has not revealed itself and Carney has lots of good cards to play. Canada Strong!
I see a lot of emotional responses here and I get that. However, it's exactly what they want. People are irrational when they're upset and bullies capitalize on that. Canada needs to be calm and factually responsive, reminding the U.S. that we have an agreement already, signed by both sides. We won't be at the table to renegotiate it. They have already acted outside the agreement with sec. 232 tariffs. We will pursue whatever legal recourse we have as stated in the agreement.
I think they actually want to abrogate the agreement but don't want to be on record as the one who walked away. That way they can attempt to bankrupt Canada before all of our new concords take root, particularly with China. CUSMA stands in the way of that happening.
The alternative, should the mutual choice be not to renew the agreement for another 16 years, will be repeated annual reviews. I believe Canada can deal with that, particularly as it may well be for only another three years. It is a preferable outcome to killing the agreement and buys us time for our new agreements to germinate and blossom.
Like the U.S. we have the nuclear option as well; we can walk away. This would end their auto industry. We can cut off energy supplies in the form of oil and electricity. The truth is, it would hurt us more than them. Further, we want to trade with them in the future but not on current terms.
A conversation took place yesterday between Canada and Mexico in which it was decided that our countries would present a united front regarding CUSMA in the interest of maintaining North American trade for the benefit of all parties. We are not alone in our concerns.
Finally, using the alcohol gamut as a way to divide and conquer, given that sales are within the Provincial purview, has had a clever response. Canada has selected an advisory council representative of all Provinces and political parties. This presents a united front, not a divisive one. I urge you all to keep it that way.
