Nice sentiments but the reality is since the "No Loopholes" Bill, Bill C-233, that sought to tighten Canada's arms export laws by eliminating the automatic permit exemption for military exports to the United States, was voted down, Canada remains a lackey to US Foreign Policy, complicit in supplying weapons and materiel that kill Gazans, Lebanese, Sudanese, Somalis, Russians and others everyday.
Nothing has changed.
The automatic permit exemption for the US ( and for Israel if the proposed US law passes linking their armed forces) is still in effect, committing Canada to supply the US, no questions asked!

I fail to see how billions of dollars worth of submarines is going to protect Canada, can they surface, breaking through metres of polar ice?

Well for submarines the money will be definitely leaving Canada as either South Korea or Germany in partnership with Norway are the only submarine builders being considered.

Pietro, I think you're raising two separate issues.
One is Canada's arms export policies and our relationship with U.S. defence supply chains. That's a legitimate debate and one Canadians should have.
The other is the point of this article...
where Canada spends its defence dollars and whether those dollars create Canadian jobs, investment, technology, and industrial capacity here at home.
You may disagree with increased defence spending altogether, and that's a fair position.
But if Canada is going to spend those billions, I would rather see more of the economic benefits stay in Canada than flow elsewhere.
As for submarines, their purpose isn't to invade anyone.
It's to know what's happening in our waters before someone else decides they own them.
We had the debate on supplying arms without scrutiny to the US and Israel when Bill C233 was shamefully voted down.
Military spending is already out of control.

Thats the cost of a pipeline or electricity transmission line.

Spending 5% of GDP on a military buildup in my view is the height of insanity.
Pietro, I think reasonable people can disagree on how much Canada should spend on defence.
Where we differ is on what the world looks like today.
Russia invaded Ukraine.
China is expanding its military presence globally.
The Arctic is becoming more strategically important every year.
Whether we like it or not, geography doesn't exempt Canada from those realities.
As for who Canada's greatest threat is, I'd argue the bigger risk isn't necessarily invasion.
It's becoming dependent on other countries for our security, supply chains, energy, technology, and critical infrastructure.
You may see defence spending as a cost.
I see part of it as an insurance policy.
The question isn't whether we spend money.
The question is whether that money leaves Canada or helps build Canadian capability, Canadian industry, and Canadian sovereignty.
