I trust Mark Carney. What i hate is the conservative leader who's name I wont speak out loud. He tries to divide us. As all the conservatives do now. PeePee lies just like trump

Fair enough, Cat...

I think a lot of Canadians are feeling protective of unity right now.

People can disagree on policy, but division gets expensive fast...

especially when outside pressure is already testing the country.

PP & Orangeball are twins & not very nice one, add DS & you have 3 ugly triplets haha, sorry, not sorry!

Some of our Prime Ministers allowed US ownership and privileges more than others. Now we are paying the price.

Fred Ferguson (GeezerWise)'s avatar

Some truth to that, Joanne...

We got comfortable being tied too tightly to one customer.

The real question now is whether Canada finally learns the lesson.

Yep Harper was the worst! From media to SK Wheat Board! To the 31yr backdoor deal with China signed behind closed doors with 0 consultation!

Fred Ferguson (GeezerWise)'s avatar

Successive governments made choices people still debate, L M...

and some of those long-term deals are definitely getting a second look now.

I think what’s changed is Canadians are paying much closer attention to who we depend on and what control we’ve handed away.

The grand sell off was Mulroney & Harper…. just is

I was saying a few days ago that Conservatives are downright GLEEFUL that the press ran with this “recession” narrative which is out of context but fits the MAGAT template perfectly. And predictably, Poilievre is running true to form with the smirks, bad jokes and of course more witty slogans. There is no evidence on his part of an attempt to foster cohesion, collaboration or encouragement when Canadians need it the most. There is no support. There is no sign of his pre-promised pledge to help instead of hinder. The divisiveness is all-pervasive and designed to rile up the cheap seats in the back.

Thank God our government is not in his hands.

Fred Ferguson (GeezerWise)'s avatar

Many Canadians are clearly worried about division right now, JBO.

Whatever side people sit on politically, this feels like one of those moments where the country needs steadier hands and fewer slogans.

Patsy Rideout's avatar

Yes, thank God!!! Our country would be covered with ICE agents by now!

Fred Ferguson (GeezerWise)'s avatar

Hard to know where things would be, Patsy...

but I think a lot of Canadians are relieved we’re charting our own course and keeping Canadian decisions in Canadian hands.

Patsy Rideout's avatar

Thanks for making sense of all that mess Fred! I am still buying Canadian, may keep doing this forever haha. Canada Strong!

Fred Ferguson (GeezerWise)'s avatar

Thank you, Patsy... and honestly, I think a lot of Canadians are feeling the same way right now.

Once you start paying attention to where your dollars go, it’s hard to unsee it.

Canada Strong!

The cheap shots that PP keeps flinging absolutely confirms that Canada avoided a disaster in the last election. Canadians know it too, with Mark Carney's approval rating surging. We realize that even though things here aren't perfect, we're on the right track. PP rarely takes the high road, and is so similar to the Orange Menace to our south. A Maple MAGA through and through.

Fred Ferguson (GeezerWise)'s avatar

Many Canadians seem relieved by the election outcome, Jerry, and I think people are watching closely to see whether the country feels steadier over time.

Politics aside, most folks just want less chaos and more confidence about where Canada’s headed.

So Canada will survive to be the strongest nation in the west, thanks to the steady hand of Mark Carney. Reading further on this Substack I see that he has now pissed off Australia as well, it was only a matter of time before the rest of the Commonwealth gets into gear and fights back against that tangerine turd.

Fred Ferguson (GeezerWise)'s avatar

Canada’s definitely showing more backbone than many expected, Penny.

I think a lot of countries are reassessing relationships and priorities right now.

Interesting times... and probably more change ahead than behind us.

Penny Frost's avatar

I sincerely hope you are correct Fred. There is a lot of whining going on because Labour has instituted Value added tax on private schools and enrolments are falling. If these parents can afford to send their progeny to private schools they can have a few less cocktails and pay 17% extra. Nigel Farage , a racist and bigot( and grifter) is the product of a private school, so I make my case!

Entirely true--successive Canadian governments were simply too complacent, too comfortable with the status quo. Now Canada is paying the price, and we have to see if new approaches to trade can turn the tide. It would be great to see the provinces join together to eliminate interprovincial trade barriers, but they haven't rallied fully to the cause.

Fred Ferguson (GeezerWise)'s avatar

I think a lot of Canadians would agree with that, SR.

We got very comfortable with the status quo.

If there’s a silver lining here, it may be the push to diversify...

and yes, finally tackling interprovincial trade barriers would be a smart place to start.
