This is a beginning and the momentum has to continue. We must not let ourselves become complacent and fall back into the cycle we were mired in before. It is incumbent on the Federal Government to help Canadian businesses expand into foreign markets, that they may have previously thought unattainable.

Exactly, Ron.

Diversification can’t be an emergency response we forget about when things calm down.

The goal should be permanent...

keep the U.S. relationship, but make sure Canadian businesses have a whole lot more doors they can knock on.

This is very reassuring, thanks for identifying these trends. The human tornado that is our Prime Minister is also. My new car battery abruptly failed last week, which meant I had no brakes at all( how is it legal that the electronic Emergency Brake is allowed to fail?!) and I park on a slope heading to both traffic and the open Atlantic. Not only would the car not start or respond but started to roll backwards. Some how wobbly old me managed to hard wrench the 3000 lb car around in a big curve until it braced against a curb til the tow truck came. It was terrifying and exhilarating when it finally responded, can t help but see an analogy.

That’s one hell of an analogy, Bev.

And forget the trade numbers for a minute... I’m just glad you’re okay.

A 3,000-lb car rolling toward traffic and the Atlantic is a little too much excitement for one day. 😳

thanks,Fred. it was a lot, but also as I said a thrill to have dealt with it. I shared it with the twin purpose of letting you folks know in case I m not the only one, that electronics are dangerous and there should always be a manual overide. Wonder when we ll start to hear about the others who are not so lucky as I was. And is the the future of ai too? PS even the tow guy was scared. Getting it by himself on the flatbed was quite the job.The old government regulations writer me was aghast and still am.

PPS I told the tow guy, who was a young man of maybe eastern recent European extraction,” You re just amazing!” and he said “ I know."

Wow! Fred, you sure hit the nail on the head! The lines struck a chord with me: "But if they persuade Canadian companies and Canadian governments to spend the next decade finding other customers, building other supply chains, and signing other agreements, something else happens.

The leverage starts shrinking." Exactly! Once these new supply chains are successfully in place over time, the attempt by the US (Trump & Company) to dominate us will have been proven to be an abject failure; there will be no appetite on our side to go back to the way things were. And for when the Democrats hopefully regain control in the US, the scenario for Canada cannot possibly change overnight. Some commentators and pundits on this side of the border have said that we just have to bide our time and wait for Trump to be gone. For what, to continue our total dependence on one sometimes erratic trading partner? It's so reassuring that our PM Mark Carney always plays the long game.

Fred Ferguson (GeezerWise)'s avatar

That’s the part that matters, Jerry.

This can’t be about waiting Trump out and then going back to business as usual.

Once Canada has more customers, more supply chains and more options, why would we voluntarily give that leverage away again?

Keep America as a major partner... just never make it our only game in town again.

It’s a little concerning just how much the media insists on being complacent and not changing circumstances. Canada has been far to dependent on one customer for far to long and this message of just wait it out is lazy. We need to diversify regardless of what is happening in the US. Canada needs to access more markets and more of the world. We need to stop taking the easier path and do what is good for Canada long term. Diversity in trade is a good stepping stone to a more independent and international economy.

Fred Ferguson (GeezerWise)'s avatar

Exactly, Kalyrn.

“Wait it out” just puts us right back where we started.

Diversification made sense before Trump, it makes sense now, and it’ll still make sense after him.

Canada needs options because options are independence.
