What I Respect About Donald J. Trump (Even Though I Wish I Didn’t)
“A flawed figure. A relentless force. A lesson wrapped in contradiction.”
What I Respect About Donald J. Trump (Even Though I Wish I Didn’t)
Dear Son,
This might be the strangest letter I’ll ever write.
Because it starts with a confession:
I have very little respect for Donald J. Trump — the man, the persona, the bully.
But there’s one thing I can’t ignore.
The man doesn’t give up.
And I respect that part.
Even though I wish I didn’t.
I despise how he bullies, blames, gaslights, and divides.
I detest the lies, the narcissism, and the cruelty dressed up as strength.
I believe leadership should lift people up — not stomp them down.
So please hear me when I say:
This letter isn’t an apology for who he is.
It’s a spotlight on one quality he has — one I can’t deny — and why I think it’s worth understanding.
Trump has a kind of persistence that borders on obsession.
When he decides something is his, he doesn’t stop.
He doesn’t care who mocks him, sues him, or tries to hold him back. He keeps going.
That kind of tunnel vision — that relentlessness — is something most people only dream of harnessing.
The tragedy is what he chooses to use it for.
If I had a son, I’d tell him:
You don’t have to like someone to learn from them.
Trump teaches us something accidentally:
that unstoppable drive is real — and if you can match it to wisdom, empathy, and a greater good…
…you’ll move mountains.
The problem isn’t persistence.
It’s what you persist in service of.
I still don’t like him.
I don’t think history will be kind.
But I respect his fight.
And I want you to fight, too —
But for truth. For people. For peace. For purpose.
If I had a son, I’d want him to hear this…
Real strength isn’t about never quitting.
It’s about knowing what’s worth never quitting on.
Your old man,
Fred
