Donald Trump sold them “Trickle-Down Tariffs.”
The difference?
One was a theory.
The other shows up every time somebody buys groceries, shoes, appliances, electronics, furniture, or auto parts.
The catch?
You never see it.
Because tariffs are the only tax most people pay that never appears on the receipt.
Let’s Pretend You’re Buying a Toaster.
An American store orders a toaster from overseas.
The manufacturer charges $100.
When the toaster arrives at the U.S. border, the government says,
“There’s now a 25% tariff.”
The manufacturer doesn’t pay it.
China doesn’t pay it.
Mexico doesn’t pay it.
Canada doesn’t pay it.
The American importer pays it.
Now that toaster costs the importer $125.
The importer still has to make money.
So they sell it to Walmart for maybe $145 instead of $120.
Walmart still has employees to pay.
Rent.
Electricity.
Insurance.
Profit.
Now the toaster sits on the shelf for $179 instead of $149.
Who paid the tariff?
You did.
But Wait...
You never wrote a cheque to the government.
You never saw “Tariff Tax” printed on your receipt.
All you saw was…
Toaster - $179
That’s why tariffs are politically useful.
People notice prices.
They don’t notice why prices went up.
Imagine Buying 100 Things
Now imagine that same tariff hits…
washing machines
refrigerators
televisions
phones
toys
clothing
bicycles
lumber
steel
car parts
coffee makers
kitchen tools
food ingredients
None of those receipts says…
Tariff Tax: $14.82
The tariff is buried inside the price.
It’s invisible.
The Greatest Sales Pitch
Donald Trump repeatedly tells crowds:
“Foreign countries pay the tariffs.”
Sounds wonderful.
Except they don’t.
Foreign companies sell the product.
American companies import it.
American companies pay Customs.
American stores raise prices.
American families pay more.
That’s the money trail.
Water Always Runs Downhill
Think of tariffs like pouring a bucket of water at the top of a staircase.
The water never stays at the top.
It runs downhill.
Businesses pass costs to distributors.
Distributors pass costs to retailers.
Retailers pass costs to shoppers.
Money works exactly the same way.
Costs flow downhill until they reach the only person who can’t pass them on.
The customer.
The Invisible Receipt
If every cash register printed this line…
Federal Tariff Cost ............ $18.42
People would start asking questions.
Instead they only see…
TOTAL: $247.81
The tax disappeared.
But the money didn’t.
Trump’s Trickle-Down Tax
Ronald Reagan believed wealth would trickle down.
Donald Trump discovered something else trickles down.
Taxes.
Not taxes you can see.
Taxes hidden inside the price of nearly everything you buy.
That’s why millions of Americans honestly believe somebody else is paying them.
While quietly paying them every single day.
The Gut Punch...
The most effective tax isn’t always the biggest one.
It’s the one people never realize they’re paying.
The Tariff Bucket
Draw five buckets stacked vertically…
Government
↑
Importer
↑
Distributor

Retailer

Customer 💰At each step, the bucket gets a little heavier until the customer ends up carrying almost all the weight.
It’s simple enough that even someone who has never thought about tariffs…
before can grasp it in about 15 seconds.

The additional sad thing is, when one set of tariffs were declared invalid, refunds went to the businesses that submitted the tariff payment. This became a windfall profit for the importer, who might have even shared a portion with the wholesaler or retailer. The final customer won't see any of that refund.
