"OH CANADA" how I wish I were Canadian. It's true that every country has it's issues, but I challenge any other country* to claim it has more vulgarity, idiocy, insanity, emotional immaturity, and flat-out liars than this US administration.

I think your reading more into the hot mike being anything more than Carney explaining the nature of the Chinese car relationship. Thats all I heard. Now Jolie doing the auto circuit tour finding out if there is interest in a Canadian auto reinvention should CUSMA not be renewed. That is building the real backup plan. As Jolie explicitly stated its about finding a partner based on 4 criteria. Canadian majority control, Canadian control of all software, Canadian suppliers and building based on domestic and export opportunities. Now that's story has substance and is probably designed to indicate that Canada is prepared to walk from an unfair agreement. I think its posturing Carney style same as with the F35's and resource and critical mineral diversification plays. The more global commitments that Canada makes the less there is for the US. Best way for the US to capture these markets is to renew CUSMA. So there's that. I dont think there is a hope in hell that Trump will agree to ever treat Canada as an equal partner in a trading relationship. It is still worth a try though. It will be interesting to see how fast things move if CUSMA is not renewed.

On its face, it was Carney explaining the Chinese EV arrangement and why Canada capped it at 49,000 vehicles.
Where I think it becomes interesting is when you place it alongside everything else happening at the same time...
Europe, India, the UAE, critical minerals, defence partnerships, export diversification, and now discussions about what comes after CUSMA if renewal goes sideways.
I agree that Mélanie Joly's work on a potential Canadian auto strategy may ultimately prove more significant than the hot mic itself.
That's tangible planning.
The bigger point I was trying to make is that Canada appears to be building options.
Whether that's a negotiating tactic, a contingency plan, or both remains to be seen.
And on one thing we're completely aligned... I do not expect Trump will ever view Canada as an equal partner.
Never have all your eggs in one basket can apply to a lot and wise. Walmart made in USA campaign had a one problem for companies. Some manufacturing by had to sign a contract to only sell to Walmart. When the USA policy was altered to now include cheaper foreign made,when the contract wasn't renewed, the company. It just hurt manufacturing but other business that couldn't complete with the lower prices and loss of vendors.

we can fill a few books with our mistakes too...
but I think Canadians have gained a new appreciation for stability, pragmatism, and keeping the temperature a few degrees lower.

For years, companies bent themselves into pretzels to serve one giant customer.
Then the rules changed and many were left with nowhere else to sell.
Countries face the same risk.
Diversification isn't disloyalty.

The modern version of diplomacy seems to be assuming every microphone is live and every camera is on.
That's why hot mic moments are often so revealing... they show what people say when they forget the audience is listening.
