The world is getting to be a very sad place, indeed. What is happening to Cuba is beyond cruel.

I also hurt for those people Jackie.

My feeling is that the US should be charged with crimes against humanity or whatever the proper term is for denying the basics which include fuel! They are a very poor people living on a pretty small Island. What is the point of doing this to Cubans?

Sanctions rarely hurt leaders.

They hurt citizens.

And history shows that over and over.

It would be great if Canada could arrange to supply equipment and staff to boost Cuba’s infrastructure and economy in the near future. I personally have wonderful memories of visiting Cuba, back when Fidel Castro was president, and the people there were so very friendly and welcoming. 🫶🤗

Canada yesterday announced an “accelerated funding of $8 million to be released immediately to scale up food in nutrition or vulnerable Cubans. This funding is part of an international assistance program to strengthen local food. Security and nutrition delivered through trusted partnerships with the world food program in the United Nations children fund, ensuring our aid reaches to keeping people directly.”

They are also monitoring the situation and remaining close contact with the international partners to assess response to evolving needs.

Mexico has sent over 2000 tons of direct humanitarian aid, including beans, powdered milk to the island. Russia has sent oil gasoline and liquified natural gas. China has expressed support and is providing emergency food aid.

Canada sends aid quietly through systems that reach civilians.

Other countries send ships with flags on them.

Different optics. Same human need.

I read last night that Canada is sending Aid, not sure it includes fuel.

Fred Ferguson (GeezerWise)'s avatar

Canada announced $8 million in humanitarian food aid through the UN Patsy. I haven’t seen anything confirming fuel shipments... that part seems to be coming from other countries if at all.

I also heard 🇨🇦 Canada 🇨🇦 is sending food

Thanks Fred, much appreciated :)

Absolutely, Canada should be shipping fuel to aid Cuba. Just like our PM stood up in Davos for what is right, so should we be defying the grotesque orange felons bullying of a small defenseless country.

When civilians need help, adults send aid.

Only politicians turn it into a loyalty test.

But fuel causes climate change. We can’t have that eh? 🍁

I hope Canada steps in a saves Cuban lives from the cruelty of the US regime. I am so utterly devastated by what the US has become. I am doing what I can. Protesting, boycotting, calling out politicians, financially supporting opposition, financially supporting charities that are trying to bridge cuts. But it is heartbreaking to have accept I am part of the evil empire that is causing so much pain, suffering, and death. The USA has never lived up to our ideals but this is beyond anything I thought possible before 2016.

History moves in swings. Policies change. Leadership changes. What matters is whether people stay engaged and keep pushing for better outcomes.

That’s not being part of the problem... that’s part of the solution.

Western Governments are or have been allowing the ZIONIST OCCUPIERS TO DO THE SAME TOWARDS PALESTINIANS IN THE OCCUPIED TERRITORIES AND GAZA. The FASCIST REPUBLIC OF AMERICA ARE A THREAT TO THE NATIONAL SECURITY AND SOVEREIGNTY OF EVERY COUNTRY IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE.

Yeah - it’s all because of the Joos! Rachel Gilmore, and Charlie Angus agree with you. 👍

Keep in mind that there is a politically influential faction of Exile Cubans predominantly in Florida who won't forget if Trump chickens out again. Some of them are as crazy as their Orange Idol.

Politics built on revenge rarely produces good policy. Trade decisions should be based on economic outcomes, not appeasing factions or personalities.

I have been a few times to Cuba and brought baseball stuff to the people. So sad to see what is happening to the people. I thought socialism/communism would help people? Thankfully the government shut down energy because of climate change, and we are so fortunate that our Liberal government in Canada are following the same net zero policies.

Fred Ferguson (GeezerWise)'s avatar

Cuba’s power shortages are mostly tied to aging infrastructure, fuel shortages, and financing constraints... not climate policy.

Canada still produces and exports large amounts of energy while transitioning over time.

Very different situations.
