As an Aussie, I'd far rather be in alliance with Canada than USA. Especially now that America is becoming so isolationist with their "America First" stance.
Just last week I was exchanging similar thoughts with an Australian that had written on Substack. We both hoped for more opportunities with each others country in the way of trade and economic opportunities.
That’s really interesting, Gail... and honestly it reflects something bigger that’s happening right now.
Countries like Canada and Australia are starting to look more seriously at partnerships with other middle-power economies that share similar values and resources.
Trade diversification isn’t just theory anymore... it’s becoming practical necessity.
I’m glad you enjoyed the piece, and I appreciate you being part of the conversation.
Canada and Australia would appear to be natural partners, so many commonalities. I’ve also recently read numerous comments from Australians desiring not just expanded trade with Canada, but for increased cooperation for joint development of projects that would benefit both countries - including processing and refining of critical minerals rather than just selling raw materials to other countries. Further cooperation on military and defence initiatives would also make sense given we have similar geopolitical concerns. I think this is a great opportunity for both.

I appreciate that perspective.
Canada has always done best when it builds multiple strong partnerships rather than relying too heavily on any single one.
The global landscape is shifting right now, and a lot of countries are reassessing relationships at the same time.
Alliances tend to evolve with circumstances... and we’re clearly in one of those moments.
As an American, I'm just glad for opportunities like this to be reminded there are still grownups in the room.
I don’t see a downside, why didn’t we start earlier. I think we have a lot in common with Australia!
I think a lot of people are asking that same question right now, Nancy... why we didn’t move sooner.
For decades the U.S. market was so dominant and reliable that diversification didn’t feel urgent.
It took disruption to change that mindset.
And you’re right about Australia.
There are real similarities... resource economies, distance from major markets, and the need to balance relationships with larger powers.
That creates natural alignment.

Thanks for a good piece Fred

That’s a thoughtful take, Kevin... and you’re touching on something important.
Canada and Australia really do have complementary strengths, especially in resources and critical minerals.
Moving further up the value chain instead of just exporting raw materials would benefit both countries long term.
And you’re right... cooperation doesn’t have to stop at trade.
Strategic partnerships often evolve across multiple areas when interests align.
It’s definitely an opportunity worth watching.
So good.
