One of the incentives offered by Germany on the submarine tender was investment in LNG and port facilities in Churchill Manitoba. The Germans do no how to make a deal. In any event an LNG facility on the East coast makes sense and the seasonality of loading gas into storage from spring to early fall fits the shipping season from Churchill to a T. No need to deal with the trading of shipments to reduce shipping distance. Churchill or i would prefer Montreal make better sense to serve Europe than facilities on the pacific coast.

Larry, fair point on Churchill and I agree Germany knows how to negotiate strategically.

The submarine/LNG angle is interesting.

My only pushback is geography and economics still matter.

The gas is already in Western Canada... moving it ~750 km to BC is a different animal than hauling it across the country first.

That said, if Churchill or Montreal can eventually make economic sense for Europe, I’m all for Canada having multiple doors open instead of one.

More options = more leverage.

There are significant deep basin gas deposits in northrrn manitoba between 700 - 1000 km from Churchill and no mountains so a whole lot less expensive. Of the Germans thinj Churchill is the answer why doubt them. Wab Kinew is all in. Get it done using opm.

Im sorry gas deposits are in Northern Saskatchewan not Manitoba

I was surprised that environmental concerns were not raised about this project. But it First Nations can own and control this project I think the environmental mitigation will be dealt with well. Nothing like living in the zone to make you aware of potential problems. While in a perfect world we would not use fossil fuels, better that Canada moves ahead than wait for the US to annex us and then there would be no benefits for the First Nations and certainly no concern for the environment.

Joanna, fair point.

I think a lot of people missed that piece.

If First Nations are owners and decision-makers... not just spectators... there’s a strong incentive to protect the land because they actually live with the consequences.

And yes, in a perfect world we’d transition faster, but we don’t live in a perfect world.

Canada still has to be economically strong and sovereign while we get there.
