BC Finally Says the Quiet Part Out Loud...
Free speech is fine. Colluding with a foreign power isn’t.
Let’s call this one out for what it is.
Not politics.
Not “healthy debate.”
Not “regional frustration.”
When someone starts shopping your country around to a foreign government like it’s a used snowblower on Kijiji… we’ve crossed a line.
And somebody finally said it out loud.
The word nobody wanted to use
David Eby, the premier of British Columbia, didn’t tiptoe.
He didn’t whisper.
He didn’t “both-sides” it.
He basically said…
If you go to another country asking for help to break up Canada…
that’s not protest.
That’s not patriotism.
That’s treason.
Plain English. No garnish.
Frankly?
About time.
Because for months we’ve watched other leaders treat this stuff like it’s just spicy talk radio.
It isn’t.
Meanwhile in Alberta… crickets
Over in Alberta, Danielle Smith keeps playing Switzerland.
“Don’t demonize them.”
“Let’s hear everyone out.”
“Free speech.”
Sure. Free speech is sacred.
But free speech doesn’t mean you get to court foreign governments for a breakup loan.
One of the loud separatist organizers openly bragged about…
Meeting U.S. State Department officials
Talking about support if Alberta splits
Floating a $500 billion line of credit
Discussing pension conversions into U.S. dollars
Read that again slowly.
That’s not “grassroots frustration.”
That’s geopolitical freelancing with someone else’s country.
If some guy in Manitoba tried that with China or Russia, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police would be knocking before supper.
Why the silence?
Here’s the part most people miss.
It’s not ideology.
It’s math.
Leadership races in Canada aren’t decided by the whole province.
They’re decided by small pools of party members.
Sometimes just a couple thousand people.
Stack the room with a motivated fringe…
and suddenly the fringe picks the boss.
So leaders end up catering to the very people who helped crown them.
It’s like letting the tail wag the dog… then acting surprised when the dog runs into traffic.
That’s how you get premiers afraid to offend the loudest 5%.
And the logic problem nobody talks about
There’s also a basic reality check.
You can leave Canada if you want.
No one’s stopping you.
But you don’t get to…
“Take this chunk of land with me, thanks.”
Alberta didn’t exist as an independent country that later joined like some Netflix subscription you can cancel.
It was created inside Canada.
You don’t get to carve up the house because you’re mad at the kitchen.
That’s not how property works.
That’s not how law works.
And it sure as hell isn’t how countries work.
The bigger picture
While the U.S. rattles sabres.
While trade fights heat up.
While the world gets twitchier by the week…
The last thing we need is homegrown politicians flirting with breakup fantasies.
It’s like arguing over who gets the couch while the roof’s on fire.
We don’t need more drama.
We need adults.
So credit where it’s due…
Eby called it straight.
No sugarcoating.
And frankly, I’d like to see Mark Carney and every other premier grow the same spine.
Because this isn’t a culture war issue.
It’s a sovereignty issue.
You don’t negotiate your country like it’s a timeshare.
My GeezerWise take
If you love Canada… build it.
Fix it.
Argue inside it.
But running to a foreign power asking for help to split the place up?
That’s not rebellion.
That’s outsourcing your backbone.
And I’ve got zero patience for that nonsense.

With all the noise, it's nice to have someone put things into a common sense perspective. Thanks Fred!
Well said Fred. The small fringe in Alberta, I don't believe will succeed, as I think there are too many true Albertan Canadians. Having said that though, I will stay ever vigilant.
