Another MP Jumps Ship... Liberals Edge Closer to Majority
With another floor crossing and strong polling across the country, Mark Carney’s Liberals are suddenly within striking distance of a majority government.
Canadian politics just had another one of those “did that really just happen?” moments.
Another Member of Parliament has crossed the floor to join the Liberals… the fourth such move in recent weeks. This time it’s an MP from the NDP.
And it matters.
Because every seat counts in Ottawa. The magic number for a majority government in the House of Commons is 172 seats. After this latest defection, the Liberals now need just two more MPs to reach it.
If that happens, the minority era ends.
But there’s another factor quietly looming on the calendar.
April 13.
Three federal by-elections are scheduled that day.
Two of those ridings were previously held by prominent Liberal cabinet ministers… Chrystia Freeland and Bill Blair… and are widely considered strong Liberal territory.
If those seats fall back into Liberal hands, the math gets very interesting very quickly.
The Polling Picture
The political wind is clearly shifting.
A recent national survey asked Canadians whether the prime minister is doing a good job diversifying and strengthening Canada’s economy.
The agreement numbers were striking… and spread across the country:
Quebec: 72%
Atlantic Canada: 69%
British Columbia: 68%
Alberta: 66%
Ontario: 64%
Saskatchewan / Manitoba: 60%
Even Alberta… historically conservative territory… shows majority approval.
That’s not just regional support.
That’s national traction.
And it suggests something important…
Carney’s economic message is landing well beyond traditional Liberal voters.
The Strategic Voting Factor
There’s another political dynamic forming beneath the surface.
Polls show the Liberals well ahead nationally, with some surveys putting them above 40% support, while the Conservatives sit in the low-to-mid 30s.
Meanwhile the NDP has collapsed into single digits in some polls.
When that happens, voters start thinking strategically.
In close three-way ridings… especially in British Columbia and Ontario… some NDP supporters may decide their best chance of stopping Conservatives is to vote Liberal.
That kind of vote consolidation can dramatically reshape election outcomes.
It’s one of the oldest tricks in Canadian politics.
And it’s starting to show up in the numbers.
Why MPs Are Crossing the Floor
Floor crossings rarely happen in isolation.
Sometimes it’s ideological alignment.
Sometimes it’s political survival.
If the Liberals appear headed toward majority territory, some MPs may simply be making a calculation about where the country… and their careers… are heading.
A majority government would mean four years of political stability.
No confidence votes.
No sudden elections.
No minority brinkmanship.
For MPs staring at uncertain re-election prospects, that can be a powerful incentive.
The Bigger Picture
What we’re seeing right now isn’t just a few MPs switching parties.
It’s a potential realignment of the political center.
When approval numbers stretch from Quebec to Alberta…
When opposition parties start bleeding members…
When by-elections could push a minority government into majority territory…
That’s when politics starts to move fast.
April 13 may turn out to be one of those moments.
Because in Ottawa, two seats can change everything.
The Recap…
Canadian politics just got another shake-up.
Another MP has crossed the floor to the Liberals… bringing them within two seats of a majority government.
With three by-elections coming April 13, the math in Ottawa is suddenly very interesting.
This story might not be over yet.
The Gut-Punch…
In Parliament, governments rise and fall by one seat at a time.

I’m a ‘Murican & I think Carney is the right leader for Canada especially because of the madness down here in the States.
I love this very informative post, thank you! I love that people are waking up & realizing, things don't get much better than having PM Carney at the helm during these turbulent times in history. He is intelligent, above level, & confident in what he is doing. He has clear vision & we all like that...much like you Fred :)
